Διερευνώντας την Ιστορία της καταστροφής της Σμύρνης και ψάχνοντας μια αφετηρία για το έργο μου, με συγκίνησε ιδιαίτερα ένα κομμάτι της που αφορούσε την δράση του Asa Jennings.

Η εγκατάσταση “S.O.S - an homage to Asa K. Jennings”, χρησιμοποιώντας ως υλικά της την φωτεινή αλληλουχία των αρχικών S.O.S του κώδικα Μορς και τους ήχους ενός τηλέγραφου, προσδοκά να λειτουργήσει ως υπενθύμιση των γενναίων πράξεών του την συγκεκριμένη χρονική περίοδο, τιμώντας τον για όσα προσέφερε.

Ο Jennings, αμερικανός πάστορας που βρέθηκε τις ημέρες εκείνες στην Σμύρνη, στέλνοντας κωδικοποιημένα μηνύματα στον πρωθυπουργό της χώρας και ζητώντας βοήθεια, κατάφερε με το σθένος και την αποφασιστικότητά του να σώσει πάνω από 300.000 ψυχές. Ίσως κάποιοι απόγονοι των ανθρώπων αυτών να ζουν σήμερα κάπου δίπλα μας, μέσα στον προσφυγικό συνοικισμό του Χαλανδρίου.

Αναζητώντας τον κατάλληλο χώρο για την υλοποίηση της εγκατάστασης, το ενδιαφέρον μου στράφηκε σε μια σιδεριά έξω από ένα παράθυρο. Δουλεύοντας το έργο, σταδιακά ανακάλυψα έναν κρυμμένο σταυρό στο κέντρο της σύνθεσής της ο οποίος συνδέθηκε με την ιστορία του Asa Jennings και με οδήγησε στην ολοκλήρωσή του.

While researching the history of the destruction of Smyrna and looking for a way to start my art piece, I was deeply touched by a piece of said history related to Asa Jennings.

The installation “S.O.S an homage to Asa K. Jennings”, using as materials the illuminated sequence of the initials S.O.S in morse code and the sounds of a telegraph, aims to serve as a reminder of the courageous actions of A. Jennings during the destruction of Smyrna, honoring him for his service.

Jennings was an American pastor who was in Smyrna during the events, sending coded messages to the prime minister of Greece, asking for help. He managed, with his vigor and determination, to save more than 300.000 souls. Perhaps, some descendants of those people are (still) out there, thanks to his actions, and some of them may even be living in the refugee settlement of Chalandri today.

While searching for the appropriate space for the construction of the installation, my interest turned towards a window railing. After working on the piece for a while, I discovered that the railing actually contained a pattern in the middle that resembled a cross. That cross tied the piece to the story of A. Jennings, who as before stated was a pastor, thus leading to the completion of the piece.
